Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political corruption has long been a challenge in Nigeria, undermining public trust in governance and affecting the legitimacy of political institutions. In Kano LGA, Kano State, corruption in local government administration has been cited as a key factor contributing to low public confidence in elected officials and governance structures (Aliyu & Abdullahi, 2023). Political corruption in the form of bribery, embezzlement, and misuse of public resources severely impacts the quality of service delivery and hinders the development of local communities.
Public trust in governance is essential for a functional democracy, as it encourages citizens to actively participate in the political process and adhere to the rule of law. This study seeks to examine the impact of political corruption on public trust in governance in Kano LGA, with a focus on the local government's role in ensuring transparency and accountability.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political corruption in Kano LGA has led to a significant erosion of public trust in local governance, with widespread dissatisfaction among the electorate. Corruption not only compromises the integrity of electoral processes but also perpetuates poor governance, making it difficult for citizens to rely on their government for the provision of basic services. This study aims to investigate how political corruption in Kano LGA affects public trust in governance and identify potential measures for restoring citizens' confidence in local leadership.

1.6 Significance of the Study

It will primarily analyze the perceptions of local residents and public officials regarding corruption and governance. Limitations include potential biases in the responses of citizens and challenges in accessing official records of corruption cases.

• Public Trust in Governance: The confidence citizens have in their government's ability to govern fairly, transparently, and effectively.
